Biggest Plumbing Myths

Friends and family tell us little myths growing up that we transform into little truths. Everyone knows that an apple a day can keep the doctor away and that you should not go swimming directly after eating. However, similar sayings may not benefit your home. Often, what worked in the past may not work now. At bluefrog Plumbing + Drain, we are here to dismantle the myths that may affect your plumbing.

1. Running Water Helps Waste Run Smoothly Through the Disposal

Some people assume that because they run the water, they can put anything down the disposal. However, this not true. Some foods are not meant to go down the disposal. Things like banana peels and eggshells can harm your drains, even if the water is running. This myth can also unnecessarily increase your water bill.

2. Plumbing Fixtures Can Be Cleaned with Hand Soap

While Grandma may have touted the effectiveness of hand soap, it does not always work when cleaning plumbing fixtures. Material such as brass are actually harmed by soap and should be cleaned with cut lemons and baking soda instead. Similarly, germy areas such as the toilet should be cleaned with strong disinfectants.

3. My Plumbing is Not Clogged Because Things Still Go Down the Drain

Even if food and water still go down the drain does not mean that they are functioning as effectively as they can. Some warning signs for clogs include slow moving disposal and buildup of food morsels. While the disposal may still work, it can cause potential problems in the future if not carefully handled.

4. Lemons Can Clean Your Disposal

When life hands you lemon, putting them down the disposal might not be the best solution. While it might make your garbage disposal smell nicer, it won’t actually clean it. You will need quality cleaning solutions with water and soap to do that.

At bluefrog Plumbing + Drain, we know how tempting it is to listen to Grandma’s advice. However, this may be doing you more harm than good. Break these plumbing myths to preserve your drains and faucets. For your plumbing needs, contact now our plumbers at bluefrog Plumbing + Drain.
