If your house went up before about 1960 and nobody has replaced the supply lines since, they're almost certainly galvanized steel. It was the standard material for decades, and it has a service life. The zinc lining wears away, the steel underneath it rusts, and the rust builds inward until a three-quarter-inch pipe is passing water through an opening about the width of a straw. None of that is visible from outside the pipe, which is why so many Portland homeowners spend years blaming their fixtures, their water heater, or the city.

Identifying Galvanized Pipe While Standing in Your Own Basement
You don't need a plumber to answer this question. Take a flashlight and a refrigerator magnet down to the basement or crawlspace, find where the water line enters the house, and follow it along the joists. Three tests settle it. Color and texture first: galvanized steel is a flat, dull grey, often chalky or rust-streaked with age, never shiny. Copper looks like copper or has gone brown-green. PEX is plastic, usually red, blue, or white. Then the magnet, because galvanized is steel and a magnet sticks to it, while copper, brass, and plastic hold nothing. Then the fittings: galvanized is threaded, so you'll see chunky couplings, elbows, and unions screwed onto the pipe ends rather than the smooth soldered joints of copper or the crimped rings on PEX.
Dull grey, magnetic, threaded fittings means galvanized steel supply, and that's what the rest of this page is about. Check the hot side and the cold side, and check more than one location, because a great many Portland houses have been partly re-plumbed over the decades. Copper at the water heater and grey steel everywhere else is extremely common, and what's at the heater tells you nothing about what's in the walls.
If the magnet sticks to nothing, you've ruled out galvanized steel, but you haven't finished the test, because four different materials all fail that one. Copper looks like copper or has gone brown-green, with smooth soldered joints. PEX is flexible plastic, usually red, blue, or white, on crimped rings. CPVC is cream or tan, rigid, glued at the joints rather than threaded or crimped, with CPVC printed along the pipe, and orange CPVC is fire sprinkler pipe rather than potable supply. Polybutylene is gray, sometimes blue or black, flexible, usually half or three-quarter inch, on plastic or metal crimp fittings, and it was installed roughly between 1978 and 1995. The last two are worth knowing about, because they fail differently from steel. They go brittle and split instead of closing up and weeping, and brittle plastic can break while somebody is working near it. Both plastics, and what each one does, are covered on the whole-home repiping page. They're uncommon in pre-war Portland stock, but they turn up in houses that were re-plumbed inside that window.
There's one more place to look that doesn't involve the basement at all. Open the cabinet under a bathroom sink and find the angle stops, the small shutoff valves feeding the faucet. In a pre-1960 house that has never been repiped those are frequently the same steel, giving away the same three tells, and often seized solid. That's why a straightforward faucet swap in an old Portland house so often turns into a conversation about the supply lines before the new fixture goes in. A stop that won't close, or that crumbles when it finally turns, is the same corrosion showing up one fixture at a time.
Then date the house, because in this city the era rule does most of the work. Anything built before roughly 1960 on the close-in east side went in with galvanized supply, which covers most of inner Southeast and very nearly all of the pre-war Northeast Portland stock. So the useful question is whether anybody has replaced it since. Look for a permit record, ask the previous owner if you can, and treat a listing that says "updated plumbing" as a claim to verify rather than a fact, because it often means a water heater and two new fixtures.
The short version, if you want a checklist to take downstairs:
- Flat grey pipe with chunky threaded unions at the joints
- A refrigerator magnet that sticks to it
- Built before about 1960, with no permit record of a repipe since
- Copper at the water heater but grey threaded pipe everywhere else, which is a partial re-plumb rather than a repipe
- Water that runs brown or orange for ten or twenty seconds after the house has sat, then clears
- A rust-colored stain or drip mark on a joist directly under an old run
- Pressure that is fine at the outside hose bib and poor at the upstairs shower
- A magnet that sticks to nothing at all, which means the answer is copper, PEX, CPVC, or polybutylene rather than steel, and the repiping page is where to go next
The stain on the joist is the one item on that list worth acting on quickly. Corroded steel perforates in tiny spots that can weep for months into a joist, a subfloor, or insulation before anyone notices the smell. Two Different Galvanized Problems People Constantly Mix Up

Plenty of older Portland homes still have a galvanized water service line buried between the meter at the street and the point where it enters the building. It corrodes exactly the way the interior pipe does, and when it closes down the whole house loses pressure at once, evenly, including the outside hose bibs. That's one job, it's mostly outside the building, and it usually means excavation or a pipe pull rather than opening any walls. The supply inside the walls and along the joists
Interior galvanized is the distribution system: the horizontal runs on your basement joists and the risers feeding the upstairs bathrooms. It fails unevenly, and that unevenness is the giveaway. One fixture is fine and the next is dreadful, the second floor is worse than the first, and the hot side is worse than the cold because heat speeds up the corrosion. It's a different job with different access and a different price, and it's work our own licensed plumbers do rather than a partner crew. Replacing one doesn't fix the other. The expensive version of that mistake is paying for a new service line, noticing no change upstairs, and concluding you were taken advantage of, when what you had was two separate problems. Brown Water on the First Draw
Water that stands still inside corroded steel overnight, over a weekend, or while you're away picks up rust from the pipe wall. Open the tap and that first slug comes out brown, orange, or yellow, then clears in ten or twenty seconds as fresh water arrives from the main. If that's your pattern, the rust is coming from your own pipes. Portland's Bull Run supply is soft and low in mineral content and it reaches your house clean, so anything discoloring it was picked up inside your own walls. Discoloration only on the hot side points at the water heater instead, which is a different check.
Rust Stains on the Basement Joists
A rust-colored streak or teardrop on the joist under an old run is a pinhole, and it's the thing homeowners most often walk straight past in an old Portland basement. Corroded steel perforates in tiny spots that weep rather than spray, so a leak can run for months into framing, a subfloor, or insulation with nothing to show for it but that stain. Good Pressure Downstairs, Nothing Upstairs
Uneven pressure is the signature of interior corrosion, because the restriction is wherever the pipe has closed down the most and every fixture beyond it inherits the problem. The hose bib usually taps off early in the run and stays strong, while the upstairs shower sits at the end of the longest and most restricted run in the house, on the hot side, so it gets the worst of it. Why Replacing Only What You Can See Usually Disappoints
Replacing the worst stretch you can reach is a completely reasonable instinct, which is why so many people try it. The problem is that pressure at any fixture is limited by the narrowest point anywhere upstream of it. Swap ten feet of basement pipe while the corroded run feeding the second floor stays where it is, and the second floor doesn't improve, because the restriction is still sitting between the new pipe and the fixture. People spend real money on a partial like that and then feel cheated when nothing changes upstairs, and nothing was going to change while that old run is still in place.
There's a second effect worth knowing about. Where new pipe meets old steel you have a junction of dissimilar metals, which is the condition that speeds up corrosion right at the connection. A properly installed dielectric fitting manages that. A sloppy direct connection doesn't, and that's why cheap partial work sometimes produces a fresh leak at the splice within a few years.
None of this means everything has to happen at once. It does mean the staging should be worked out from how the system is laid out rather than decided in the driveway on price alone. The part that matters here is simpler: if corroded pipe is left between the new work and the fixture you care about, that fixture behaves the way it did before, so the order the work happens in is worth planning.
A couple of checks you can run before you call anyone. Open a cold tap near where the water enters the house, then open one at the far end of a long run or upstairs. If the far fixture is dramatically worse, that gap is your restriction and it's inside the house. Then try an outside hose bib. If that's strong while the upstairs shower isn't, the trouble is the interior distribution. If everything is weak at once, including the hose bib, look at the buried service line before anything else. That takes about two minutes and it narrows things down a lot.

As a rule of thumb, if it predates roughly 1960 and has not been repiped, the supply is likely original galvanized steel. Portland's inner east side is dominated by pre-1940 housing, so in Irvington, Alameda, Sellwood-Moreland, Richmond, Hawthorne, Woodstock, Alberta, Concordia, and Rose City Park it is the default assumption rather than the exception. The only ways to be sure are to look at the pipe yourself or to find a permit record for a previous repipe.
The pattern tells you a lot. A corroded galvanized service line takes pressure down everywhere at once, evenly, including the outside hose bibs. Corroded interior distribution fails unevenly: one fixture fine and the next poor, upstairs worse than downstairs, hot side worse than cold. They're two separate jobs with different access and different pricing, and fixing one doesn't fix the other. We measure both before quoting either so you don't pay for the wrong half.
