Common Sewer Line Issues

Clogged Pipes

Several factors can cause a sewer line type to clog, resulting in issues ranging from slow-draining water in your sinks to sewage backups in your bathroom.

Foreign objects going down the drain, such as paper towels, sanitary products or baby wipes, are among the most common issues with clogged pipes. Standard flushable items can also cause clogging issues. For example, grease, food particles, toilet paper, dish soap, shampoo and toothpaste can also contribute to clogs. Opt for discarding these in the trash to thwart this issue.

Corroded Pipes

Metal pipes are at risk for corrosion, which is when they degrade due to one or more factors.

Depending on their material, the pipes in your plumbing system can last decades. Age is one of the causes that could result in corrosion. If it’s been several decades since you updated your plumbing system, consider a replacement to ensure you continue to have access to a properly working system.

Hard water is another contributing factor to pipe corrosion. It consists primarily of magnesium and calcium, which can generate mineral buildup inside the pipes. It can cause a variety of issues beyond corrosion, including clogs. Installing a whole-house water softener system is one of the best ways to prevent hard water.

Burst Pipes

A burst pipe is one of the biggest horrors homeowners face. What once starts as a minor problem, such as a tiny leak, can worsen over time. This is why it’s so important to schedule annual plumbing system inspections so plumbers can evaluate the condition of your system and check to make sure no leaks are present.

Once a pipe bursts, removing the sewage from your home becomes a matter of remediation. Then, plumbers must come in to fix the plumbing issue that caused the pipe to burst. If your sewer line bursts, it may send sewage back into your home and pool in your yard.

Cracked or Broken Pipes

Cracked or broken plumbing system pipes can happen for a variety of reasons. Freezing temperatures are often a leading cause, especially when the pipes aren’t properly insulated. Age and corresponding corrosion are also contributing factors.

A reliable plumber can check the state of the insulation during an annual plumbing inspection to reduce the chances of a problem. They can also evaluate your system and check for cracks that could cause more significant issues.

A video inspection can also help determine the condition of your sewer line to ensure there are no cracks or breaks that require immediate attention.

Tree Roots

Many homeowners don’t realize their sewer line is at risk of tree roots growing into them. A tree root growing into the pipe often starts as a relatively minor problem, such as when you notice your water is going down slowly. However, the situation becomes more serious as the tree roots grow bigger and accumulate debris that goes down your drains.

This can result in sewage leaks, backups, broken pipes and other issues. A video inspection is the best tool for our plumbers to determine whether tree roots are growing into your system. It’s also the least invasive because it doesn't involve digging up your yard near the pipe.
