Trenchless Sewer Line Repair Services

Can Hydro-Jetting Damage Pipes? Here’s What You Need to Know

health risks if left unaddressed. Trenchless sewer repair fixes the damaged line by repairing or replacing the pipe from the inside, with minimal disruption to your driveway, lawn, or landscaping.

bluefrog Plumbing + Drain begins every trenchless sewer repair job with a video camera inspection to confirm the pipe's condition, locate the damage, and clear any blockages with hydro jetting before repair work begins. Trenchless repair is not suitable for all circumstances, and the inspection determines which method is appropriate. For signs of a sewer line problem or to understand what might be happening underground, see our guide on how to know if a sewer line is broken or blocked.

Is Trenchless Sewer Repair Right for Your Pipes?

Trenchless sewer repair works well for pipes with cracks, corrosion, minor root intrusion, or joint failures where the pipe is still structurally present. It is not the right fit for lines that have fully collapsed, shifted significantly out of alignment, or deteriorated to the point where a liner cannot bond to the interior wall. The camera inspection is the only way to confirm eligibility. If trenchless repair is not viable, we'll explain why and walk you through sewer line repair and replacement options that fit your situation.

  • Cracks or minor corrosion, pipe structurally intact — Cured-in-Place Pipe Lining (CIPP)
  • Structural damage, pipe needs full replacement — Pipe Bursting
  • Pipe intact but reduced diameter from buildup — Slip Lining
  • Collapsed, severely misaligned, or fully deteriorated — Traditional excavation required

Pipe Bursting

Pipe bursting is used when the existing sewer pipe is severely damaged and needs to be replaced rather than rehabilitated. A specialized bursting tool is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling a new HDPE pipe into place behind it. The result is a complete trenchless sewer line replacement without digging a trench along the pipe's path. For more on this service, see our sewer line replacement page.

Cured-in-Place Pipe Lining

If the existing pipe is still structurally present but cracked, corroded, or showing minor root intrusion, we can rehabilitate it with CIPP. An epoxy resin liner is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated against the interior wall. UV light or heat then cures the liner in place, creating a seamless inner pipe within the original. Once cured, the liner effectively becomes a new pipe inside the old one.

Slip Lining

Slip lining involves inserting a new solid liner pipe of slightly smaller diameter into the existing pipework. It is the most straightforward trenchless option and works quickly, but it requires the existing pipe to be the correct size and in relatively sound structural condition. The slight reduction in interior diameter is usually not significant for most residential lines.

There’s nothing like a burst sewer line to remind you to schedule plumbing maintenance. Whether it’s the middle of the night or the middle of the weekend, bluefrog is ready to offer maintenance and repairs.

How Trenchless Sewer Repair Works: Step by Step

  1. Video camera inspection to locate the damage, assess pipe condition, and confirm trenchless eligibility
  2. Hydro jetting or mechanical cleaning to clear blockages and prepare the pipe interior for repair
  3. Method selection based on inspection findings — CIPP for rehabilitation, pipe bursting for replacement, slip lining where appropriate
  4. Liner installation or pipe bursting, typically completed in one to two days, depending on line length and access
  5. Final camera inspection to verify the repair is complete, the line is clear, and flow has been restored

Benefits of Trenchless Sewer Repair

We Repair Your Sewer Without Digging Up Your Yard

Traditional excavation requires cutting a trench along the full length of the damaged pipe through lawns, gardens, and sometimes driveways. Trenchless repair accesses the pipe through small entry and exit points, leaving the surrounding property largely intact. This also eliminates the separate restoration costs that come with backfilling and resurfacing after conventional repair.

Less Waste Than Traditional Pipe Replacement

Conventional dig-and-replace work removes large sections of pipe and requires significant soil displacement. Trenchless methods leave the existing pipe in place in most cases and require far less heavy equipment on site, which also means less carbon output compared to running excavators through your yard.

Pipe Liners That Can Last 50 to 100 Years

Cured-in-place pipe liners are designed for long-term performance. When properly installed in a suitable host pipe, CIPP liners can last 50 years or more, comparable to or better than new pipe installation in many cases.

Reduced Contamination Risk

When a sewer line is leaking, the surrounding soil has already been affected. Digging up and disturbing that soil can spread contamination further. Trenchless repair seals the pipe from the inside without additional ground disturbance, limiting the potential for further spread.

Faster and More Cost-Effective Than Excavation

Most trenchless repairs are completed in one to two days, compared to the longer timelines conventional excavation typically requires. Because there is no trench to backfill and no driveway or lawn to restore, the overall cost is often lower as well. Pricing depends on line length, pipe condition, and the method selected. Your Bluefrog plumber will provide upfront pricing after the camera inspection.

Could Roots Be Taking Over Your Pipes? Here’s What to Look for

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does Trenchless Sewer Repair Take?

Most residential jobs are completed in one to two days. CIPP lining on shorter runs can sometimes be done in a single day; pipe bursting on longer or more complex lines may take longer. Your bluefrog plumber will give you a realistic timeline after the camera inspection confirms the scope.

Does Trenchless Sewer Repair Require a Permit?

Permit requirements vary by municipality. bluefrog handles the permitting process where required and ensures all work meets local code before the job is closed out.

Can Trenchless Repair Fix Tree Root Damage?

Yes, in most cases. CIPP lining works well for pipes with minor to moderate root intrusion where the pipe wall is still structurally present. If roots have caused significant structural damage or the pipe has collapsed, pipe bursting or traditional excavation may be needed instead.

Will Trenchless Sewer Repair Damage My Lawn or Driveway?

In most cases, no. Access requires only small entry and exit points rather than a full trench. Some minor surface disturbance at access points is possible, but nothing comparable to conventional excavation. Your bluefrog plumber will walk you through what to expect on-site before work begins.
